I guess it all boils down to the definition of the phrase "decent system".... point being, I've seen budget systems outperform bling-bling time and time and time again. Budget systems aren't the ones that "rattle" it's the clueless installs that rattle.

2nd point being... I (and most people I know) will probably NEVER have the kind of extra cash to spend 4k to 5k on a system... as in... spending 4k to 5k is laughable to many people (just another perspective).

Its laughable, becasue you may spend it on something else? Like a tv or supplements.. Each there own, but never judge a person by what he or she buys. Just becasue you might think its laughable, to them it isn't.. But hey each there own.. For a budget system out performing a bling bling, I dont even know what your talking about by bling bling, unless you mean the more expesnive stuff.. If so, usually that will most likely out perform the cheaper stuff unless installed poorly... But money doesn't always mean the best.. But I digress, to compete you need money and it installed properly case closed.. IMO you want decent system, its gonna cost you.. But as You stated decent is different to everyone..

I think what we are getting into would be the Porsche 911 vs Lets say a modified AWD DSM.

Sure the DSM may be as fast as the 911 and perform as good but the 911 is going to turn more heads.

true, but you also must remember the time value of money. 600 bucks 10 years ago (when the neogeo launched) is like 1200 bucks today. if they launched at 800+ then the ps3 would flop, but there are plenty of people whow would throw down that type of money for one since they are aiming at the 18+ gaming market.
