I picked up a 500gb external, usb 2.0, sits on top of my tower. Works very well, I have all of my music and porno backed up on it, and other important .docs.

bought a 1TB western digital mybook essential today.

was marked own to 220$ kinda pissed, got home, and saw it was same price on amazon.com (or close enough) - would of gotten near 1000 points towards cash back using my amazon visa card through them..

Its better to buy a hard drive and external encloser separately. you can save tons of money that way. Normally, the enclosures are worth around 20+ bucks with a hard drive that is worth 100+ bucks. A pre-build external hard drive can go over 200 dollars (as I see you have found out).

I currently have a 2.5 inch 160 gig IDE hard drive that cost me 50 bucks in a 15 dollar enclosure. It works like a charm.

I personally build my own and have done so for many years. It saves money and you can get better options in the enclosure then buying prebuilt.

honestly, you'll be fine with whatever brand you decide. They all have their issues, but its not likely to happen to every HD they make. I personally am using a maxtor external 100g and a WD 350g for my internal. Both have been fine. i also have a 60g samsung that has no issues. The faster the rpm, the better though.

so i bought this external hard drive right.. the thing is tiny.. like 1/8 the size of my desktop, alot smalelr than my laptop...

but it has 1 terabyte (1,000GB?) memory...

.... why dont they make desktops with this much memory (or more)?!

and why dont they make laptops with this much memory ?!?!

it obviously doesn't take up much space, if they can jam it into this tiny box...


I am pretty sure I know the answer.. but it's f'ed up when I think about it how it works..
