i always wondered. doesnt the rat try to bite the inside of the snake. since they eat them live, got to figure they are alive for at least 30 second while inside the snake.

LOL, I think the rat's jaw and skull would be effectively compressed shut. Don't know how long they live after they're eaten- but I would think their bones are crushed almost instantly as they enter.

Actually I feed my snake pre-killed rats. Its just safer for the snake and really just as cool as feeding live. He still strikes at it, and quickly wraps it up and crushes it.

But if I did feed live, the snake would wrap around and constrict the prey, suffocating and crushing it. They typically hold this position for a minute or two just to make sure their prey is dead. There have been cases where a snake was ripped apart from the inside, but its very rare and would only happen to a snake that was fed live prey.

They should never be eaten "alive", as in still alive when they snake is swallowing it. All the bone crushing is done during constriction. Heres a few more pics...
