  • Recommendations for workouts for 72 year-old

My father's been active throughout his life and I was trying to set up a workout program for him as he wants to retain muscle as well as keep healthy in the cardiovascular area. He's about 6' and a 175 pounds carrying a bit of extra weight around the waist. Any suggestions from the knowlegeable in this area?

    Thanks

In the last 3 months, Bill Starr has been concentrating on training for the older athletes/ person in his column for Ironman. Some of his reccomendations include higher reps and more frequent training. If your father hasn't trained in awhile definitely begin light and with limited range of motion in the exercises.

lots of calf raises and weight bearing exercises -- will help develop balance which can prevent falls (which can be serious at an older age).

I also believe they recommend uppe rbody strength so that in the instance of a fall the individual hopefully has enough arm strength to catch themselves/cushion some of the impact

since you say he is carry extra weight, obviously low intensity/low impact cardio would be great -- something like a bicycle or elliptical, or even swimming/water aerobics/cardio. .. running is high impact and puts alot of stress into the knee and lower body, which could result in pain!

Bill Starr adressed that too in his article... that balance is another attribute that decreases with age. And cites another article that states that balance decreases rapidly after 50 and that by 70 most can stand on one leg for an average of 7 seconds.
