  • How much protein can we intake?

    Has anyone got any links to info to read up on in regards to the amount of protein our bodies can make use of at one time?

    Was speaking to a salesperson at a health store who asked what protein powder I was taking. I mentioned I took dymatize's elite complex which has about 50 grams of protein per serving. He mentioned the body can only intake around 20-30 grams at one time and the rest was a waste...

    Each individual varies, but 20-30 just seems to be what everyone says

      It is really what the body needs at time of ingestion. The 20-3of protein came from a general recommendation of ~200g for bodybuilders, divide that by 6 meals a day and there you go.

              great info -- it's much better to consume smaller amounts more frequently spread out through a day rather than large amounts less frequently

              why people buy these shakes/drinks/bars with like 50g+ protein is beyond me, they clearly have the misconception that more is better and dont understand the biology/physiology behind the matter.

                Also take into account the TYPE of protein you're taking. 40g+ of casein will be utilized more efficiently than an equal amount of whey due to the digestion and absorption being spread out over a much longer period of time.

                  Hehe guess I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and consume more shakes, meaning bringing some to work to get past the quota!

                    Hehe nothing wrong with that...keep a 5lb can of whey in my desk at work. Never miss a meal.
